IDEAS Lab builds the mathematics and software behind ship design — from computer-aided geometric design (CAGD) and hull form modeling to AI-integrated design automation and, ultimately, connected design–production automation in the shipyard.

Build the next generation of ship design tools with us — from the geometry of curves and surfaces to LLM agents and shipyard automation. Students need no prior research experience — curiosity and interest in programming matter most.

Research directions

CAGD theory → hull form modeling → AI-integrated hull form generation → AI applications in shipbuilding
01

CAGD Theory

Mathematical foundation for curve and surface representation: B-splines, T-splines, G¹ Bézier interpolation over curve networks with T-junctions.

02

Hull Form Modeling

Computer-aided ship design: constraint-satisfying hull form generation, variation, and reconstruction for design and CFD.

03

AI-Integrated Design

Reinforcement learning, ML surrogate models and LLM agents with function calling for intelligent hull form design.

04

AI in Shipbuilding

Industrial AI beyond the hull: corrosion inspection, outfitting design automation, and ship-operation data analytics.

Vision

Intuitive design + integrated design–production automation

In the next five years we aim to build an LLM-based early ship design automation framework, extending our NRF, KRISO and KEIT projects. Looking further ahead, we work toward design systems usable by non-specialists, 3D design models linked directly to welding robots, next-generation shipbuilding CAD kernels, and production automation robotics.
